Dr Renae Barker, a specialist in regulation and religion at the University of Western Australia, said the new bishopric had risen up out of division around human sexuality.
"This is a discussion which is going on around the world," she said, adding the United States, Canada and New Zealand had gone down a comparable way.
"Where a different legitimate substance … has been set up as a different Anglican character for the people who are worried about where the congregation is taking in issues of human sexuality."
She said it was not the initial time a different Anglican church association had been set up in Australia.
"During the 1990s, the Australian Anglican Church started appointing ladies.
