The Australian Olympic boss, who said he had experienced serious psychological wellness issues since resigning from the game last year, made the declaration in a pre-recorded video displayed at a worldwide highest point in Canada on finishing homophobia and transphobia in sport.
"I guaranteed myself that when my rugby vocation finished, I would keep on carrying on with the remainder of my life in the character and the body that I realize I am intended to be in," Green said.
"I just realized it would have been the most freeing feeling when I had that medical procedure and to be in the body I realized I must be. That was a splendid flash to me during these dim times confronting evil spirits, however I realized there was good reason to have hope."
The 29-year-old, who won a gold decoration at the Rio Games in 2016, turns into the primary Olympian to emerge as a trans man. Having had a little girl, Waitui, with his accomplice, Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts, Green said it was critical to show others how its done and help other people who might be confronting similar choices.
"A central motivation behind why I needed to do this and talk is on the grounds that I believe my girl should see me one day and say, 'Goodness, my father was sufficiently fearless to discuss this, and my father was sufficiently courageous to impart his story to others to assist them with carrying on with their lives somewhat better, somewhat simpler than whatever he did right now,'" he said.
"Carrying on with a daily existence as your actual self is conceivable. It is feasible to track down affection, to have children, to get hitched, to do all that, despite the fact that there are regulations out there and individuals saying you should or shouldn't do that. You can make it happen."
Erik Denison, a Monash University specialist engaged with research around homophobia and transphobia in sport, hailed Green's courage and said public help from high-profile competitors was important given the disturbing paces of self destruction and poor emotional well-being among trans and orientation different youngsters.
