Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) stated on Sunday that the House select committee looking into the attack on the Capitol on January 6 is "not winding down" and is merely nearing the end of one series of hearings, which this week will "open people's eyes in a significant way" on former President Donald Trump.
"We continue to receive daily new visitors who have information and are prepared to speak on the record. So it's been incredible how the amount of material we're getting has simply dramatically increased since these hearings have begun, he said in an interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation."
The seventh meeting of the committee will take place Thursday night with a focus on Trump's activities in the hours following his rallying of followers to march to the Capitol.
Although Kinzinger indicated he anticipates additional hearings beyond this week, depending on what fresh material is discovered, there had been rumours that this might be the last public session. He also expects that when the committee's final report is out, there will be one or two more hearings.
A subpoena for former Vice President Mike Pence is also still being discussed by the committee, despite Kinzinger's personal opinion that it is not warranted.
He said that the committee is more concerned with whether to interview Trump than if they will learn the truth from him. "I'm not sure we'd get a tonne more out of him than what his staff has already told us," he said.
"Donald Trump has made it apparent that, to put it lightly, he doesn't mind not speaking the truth. He lies all the time, so I wouldn't rule out lying while being sworn in. Therefore, I'm not sure what value there is," he remarked.
According to the committee's announcement, it will disband 30 days after publishing its final report, which will include a summary of its findings, conclusions, and suggestions for corrective action.
